A Narrative Inquiry of the Experience of Couple Art Therapy to Improve the Marital Relationship
Sim Min-Ju

Kim Gab-Sook
Abstract
A narrative inquiry was conducted on the art therapy experience of a married couple with severe marital conflict to examine how each partner narrated their life experiences through their artworks and conversations and explore the meanings of their experiences. The couple had been married for nine years and had a child. Art therapy was performed biweekly from March 2019 to February 2021, and 20 sessions were delivered. Field texts were collected through the participants¡¯ artwork and text messages, research diaries, transcripts of art therapy sessions and interviews, behavioral observation data, and research notes. The participants¡¯ life experiences were identified as follows: ¡°I encountered myself, a young person feeling pain¡± and ¡°Living as a married couple is having a journey during which one shares one¡¯s life with another.¡± The meaning of the participants¡¯ art therapy experiences was as follows: ¡°Art therapy expanded the perspective on life and broadened the scope of self-understanding¡± and ¡°Art therapy led to the experience of a shared life through changes in the perspective toward the spouse.¡± Hence, art therapy for a married couple helped them understand each other better and increased their self-awareness, leading the couple to experience changes in their perspectives toward their spouse. The results of couple art therapy confirmed that a marital relationship should be based on self-understanding in a life connected to the family of origin, a positive relationship ¡®between me and myself¡¯ can be extended to a healthy relationship between me and others, and the positive emotions of the married couple are likely to benefit the entire family.
